Reliable solution for the transport of sugar

Belgosuc is a global player in the production of semi-finished products based on natural sugars. This West-Flemish company, founded in 1990, focuses on the traditional and industrial food industry with its own range of products (customized).

When building their first production line in 1990, Belgosuc opted to work together with the then reference pump design on the pump manufacturers market.

But after years of gradual phasing out the use of the standard pumps of the then choice of pump brand, for a new-construction project in 2015 Belgosuc were looking for a good commercial and technical solution for a pump with a decent seal flush.

A solution that they found at Packo Pumps.

100% operational reliability thanks to custom seal configuration

When pumping sugars, there is a need for a double seal with secondary flushing liquid (water). This ensures that a (liquid) barrier arises. As a result, the primary liquid does not come into contact with the atmosphere and cannot crystallize out. This way no crystals are created that can damage the sliding surfaces of the primary mechanical seal of the pump.

The most economical solution for this sealing configuration is to make a flushing chamber that is sealed by an oil seal ring. For this specific application, however, this is not a good solution because of the wear-resistant character of the washed away sugar crystals. These will strongly affect the lip seal in the secondary circuit.

The second option is to provide the pump with a pressureless double mechanical seal. This will prevent wear, but there is still no guarantee that no sugar crystals will come between the sliding surfaces of the primary mechanical seal and thus damage it.

This makes it obligatory to consider a third option. A double mechanical seal of which the secondary part must be placed under pressure (pressurized barrier). In this way a reliable barrier is provided and the overpressure ensures that there is always pure flush product (water) between the sliding surfaces. In this way, there is no risk of crystals that can damage the primary seal.

By implementing this solution, we guarantee Belgosuc 100% operational reliability. Even after long standby of the pumps.

Why the choice for centrifugal pumps?

Sugar is a product whose viscosity is very dependent on the temperature. By means of trace heating, a certain height of the temperature is guaranteed. As a result, centrifugal pumps can be used at various positions in the installation instead of lobe pumps.

Centrifugal pumps have the great advantage that, in addition to the lower price, they are much more maintenance-friendly and, moreover, they can achieve a much higher flow rate with lower power. This makes them technically and commercially a much better solution than lobe pumps.

Packo pumps throughout the company

As a result of the strong growth in demand from various industries over the years, Belgosuc had a great need for a lot of storage capacity for the semi-finished products. As a result, sugar transfer from the waiting tanks is the largest application of the FP2 series in the most recent project. In addition, the pumps also find their application in a number of filling stations for cubitainers and small packagings. They are also responsible for perfect cleaning by applying both CIP forward and CIP return (CRP series) at the CIP station.
